INTRODUICTION
Teaching is the most noblest of all professions second only
to priesthood. Teacher is the one who develops the building blocks, the individuals,
needed to build a society.
‘’But a temple built by a teacher
Can never decay
It was human life that was built here
To last through eternity’s day’’
Teacher is the
light of the world who takes the young minds from darkness to light, from
falsehood to truth, from ugliness to beauty. He is the one who removes the
darkness and ignorance from the minds, who transforms animal being to social beings,
as Sir John Adams rightly remarked ,” Teacher is the marker of man.”
‘’The density of a society is vested on its teachers; they
are the torchbearers of human race. Teachers are social engineers. It is in their
arms the future of the society and our nation rest.”The teachers’ place in
society is of vital importance. He acts as the pivot for the transmission of
intellectual traditions and technical skills, from generation to generation and
helps to keep the lamp of civilization burning’’.Dr S.Radhakrishnan. A social
science teacher is responsible to mould very students as a socially acceptable
Person.
QUALITIES OF
TEACHER
Teaching is a career that provides challenges , excitement
,personal reward and chance to encourage and support others to achieve their
goals. There are many personal qualities and skills that make someone a good
teacher.
These include
.1.Being good at explaining things
2. being a people person and enjoying working with a range
of people
3. Enthusiasm
4.Having a strong knowledge in particular subject area
5. Being a good time
manger
5. Ability to work in a team as well as using your own initiative
7Keeping your cool under pressure
8. Having a patience and a good sense of humor
9.Being a fair minded
10. Cooping well with change
11. Enjoying a challenge
A good social science teacher know that listening to and
working with colleagues, parents other professionals and community members that
they can inspire students and improve their learning.
There are two divergent approaches to defining”
competencies “.In one of them,” competencies’’ denotes a set of conscious, trainable
skills and abilities which make a teacher effective. In other , competencies
are addressed in the context of changeability and uniqueness of each and every
educational situation and mean a
repertoire of knowledge , personal features and educational techniques.
On the basis
of the theoretical –methodological criterion, Meczkowska distinguishes the
following definitions and meaning of them;
“Competency as a
basis of effective action; to competent means to be effective”
Competency as a
condition for constructing individual psycho-social identity”
In simple words competency is the ability to do something
well .In teaching competency means the right way of conveying knowledge,
application and skills to the learners
TEACHER
COMPETENCIES
Teachers should have competency in the following areas;
- Subject Competence/ Content Competence
A teacher should
be an Embodiment of knowledge ; he should be a storehouse of the ever exploding
knowledge . In order to facilitate intellectual, emotional, spiritual and
physical enrichment in the children should keep himself abreast with the ever
growing fund of knowledge. A good teacher is also a good learner, he should
continue to learn and grow professionally. As it is remarked A lamp can never
light another lamp unless it burns its own wick, a teacher can never truly
teach unless he continues to learn himself. Teacher should be a running stream
of knowledge as Thomas A Arnold has
said ,
- Teaching technique / Transactional competence
Teaching is now considered to be
a complicated and highly technical job. In order to make teaching effective and meaningful every
teacher 8should know not only the subject matter but also the techniques of teaching and the latest
developments in the art
instruction., The teacher should also
develop the skill to provide variety of experiences in classes as it is
proved that senses are the gateways of
knowledge. The teacher should be well versed with new techniques and methods of
instruction in order to
maintain the attention span of the children . He should keep himself
abreast with the modern methodology of
instruction . He should also be competent in making use of modern Technology in
teaching.

These words show how the quality, competence and above all the character of a teacher can influence
a child as it is said , As the teacher
so the child.” He should be dedicated, punctual, impartial, sympathetic and should posses integrity. He should be a
living role model who can inspire the children.
He should also possess
the following qualities;

trustworthy, tolerant, talented
E - Educationally qualified , efficient ,
energetic, enthusiastic
A- Affectionate, abreast with the latest development in
content, methodology, etc.
C- Character, confident, caring, courageous curious committed
H- Honest, humble to acknowledge mistakes, hard working humorous
E – Empathetic
R- Responsible,
resourceful.
Other some
competencies are; Competency related to co-curricular activities, Competency to
develop teaching and learning material, Evaluation competency, management
Competency, Competency related to
working with parents, Competency to work with the community and other agencies.
CONCLUSION
Teaching is now considered to be a profession which needs
training for perfection. Professional success of every professional in his profession
depends mainly on his up-to-date professional
knowledge, fullest devotion and dedication along with his efficiency and effectiveness. In the present
day world with advancement in technology
these qualities can be inducted
through education. Asocial science
teacher play a vital role in developing
students as a good social being.
